Dawn breaks on ice, a golden glow,
I waddle forth through wind and snow.
My chick tucked warm upon my feet,
While storms above us rage and beat.
I dive beneath the frozen sea,
Where silver fish swim wild and free.
Through crystal depths I twist and glide,
Then surface with the turning tide.
At dusk I stand with colony near,
My mate's familiar call I hear.
We huddle close through polar night,
Till morning brings Antarctic light.
